The Robinson R22 is a small two-seat light utility helicopter manufactured in the USA by Robinson Helicopter Company. The R22 has a single piston engine and a two-bladed main rotor. It was first flown in 1975, and has been in production since 1979. The type has seen extensive use in New Zealand for pilot training, frost suppresion, light agricultural work and general utility flying.

The FAS Helicopter Section acquired a rather battered Robinson R22 cab from Heli Maintenance in 2019. Together with lots of other R22 bits accumulated over the years has formed the basis of a composite restoration to static display.

The chosen subject is ZK-HDB(6) c/n4269 which was operated by Ahaura Helicopters Ltd during 2008 and 2009. The original aircraft was unfortunately written off after a crash caused by a mechanical failure. We have some components from this ‘DB as well as at least one of the previous incarnations, and Simon Lawn of Ahaura Helicopters has given us his blessing to use their livery and marks.

At the time of writing the restoration is well-advanced, lacking only an engine to be substantially complete.

We are grateful to the following donors and supporters of this project:

Restoration of ZK-HDB(6) in the Aeronautical Society workshops is ongoing. Any donations of money or parts to help complete this project would be gratefully received. Please contact the Society via the contact page if you can help.
